Genereal Education Council - Minutes of April 7, 2006

Present: Judy Wilkerson, John Hodgson, Scott Campbell, Suzanne Perry-Casler, Gladis Kersaint, Bob Potter (Chair), Joan Moms, Greg Paveza, Nancy White, Ilene Frank, Diane Williams, Ram Pendyala, Bill Murray, Janet Moore

The meeting was called to order at 9:00 a.m.

Minutes approved with amendments.

1. Presentation on large class teaching strategies by Ruiz, Noll and Maner.

2. Committee Reports:

   • Changes to website should be up in two weeks. No further changes to objectives will be made until after the first round of submissions.
   • Workshop focusing on online course implementation and submission review suggested. In addition, an orientation for reviewers should occur at next meeting, using 3-4 current submissions for hands on practice.
   • Process for course approval needs to be codified. Review teams bring recommendation to full GEC and then the Council approves the course or recommends further development. At the time a course is approved, allocation of funds will also be recommended, but final fund allocation will come from the Provost.
   • The definition for Process Writing and recommendations of the GEC for faculty consideration need to be clarified and completed in time for the catalog to be submitted in November.
   • A draft of the review teams was handed out. In addition, email will be sent for that members can indicate additional areas of knowledge and inquiry and to advise as to summer schedules.
   • A discussion regarding operating procedures for the Council was discussed. Graduate Assistant Shannon Bennett will conduct research and put together a draft of simple operating procedures for the Council.

   Meeting was adjourned at 11:00 am.
