Foundations of Knowledge and Learning Core Curriculum (FKL) FKL Home | FAQ | Requirements | Courses | Philosophy | Learning Outcomes | OASIS Schedule Search | Contact Program Requirements The Core is divided into two parts: 36 credit hours (usually 12 courses) of lower-level General Education courses, usually completed by the end of your sophomore year. 6 credit hours (usually 2 courses) of upper-level course requirements, usually taken during the junior or senior year. Core Area* Requirement English Composition view courses 6 credit hours Fine Arts view courses 3 credit hours Humanities view courses 6 credit hours Human and Cultural Diversity in a Global Context view courses 3 credit hours Mathematics view courses 6 credit hours OR 3 credit hours Quantitative Reasoning view courses   3 credit hours Natural Science - Physical view courses 3 credit hours Natural Science - Life view courses 3 credit hours Social and Behavioral Sciences view courses 6 credit hours * - Six credit hours of the above coursework must be completed in Human Historical Context and Process courses. To fulfill the General Education portion of the Core Curriculum, you will need to take: 6 credit hours of English Composition, consisting of Composition I and Composition II 3 credit hours of Fine Arts 6 credit hours of Humanities 3 credit hours of Human and Cultural Diversity in a Global Context 6 credit hours of Mathematics and Quantitative Reasoning This requirement can be fulfilled by either taking 6 credit hours of approved Mathematics courses OR Three credit hours of approved Mathematics coursework along with 3 credit hours of approved Quantitative Reasoning coursework. One of these courses must have either the MAC or MGF prefix. 3 credit hours of Physical Sciences 3 credit hours of Life Sciences 6 credit hours of Social and Behavioral Sciences 6 credit hours of the above coursework must be completed in Human Historical Context and Process courses. To fulfill the upper-level requirement of the core curriculum, you will need to take: at least 1 Writing Intensive Capstone course (3 credit hours) at least 1 Capstone Experience course (3 credit hours) You must receive a minimum grade of "C-" in each course and an overall grade of 2.0 to fulfill any core requirement in either the core curriculum or the Capstone Experience. S/U grades are not acceptable for USF FKL courses. An upper-level course may fulfill a requirement within your major while also fulfilling a requirement in the Core Curriculum.
