The University of South Florida has created some exciting academic programs that are available to new students. These opportunities help new students acclimate to a new college environment and transition into a successful academic and student life. Tutoring, special coursework, and other academic support services are available to you at USF.
- Academic Success Center
Offered through the Project Thrust office, the Academic Success Center provides students with academic tutoring. The goal of the center is to "promote the academic success of students enrolled in all programs of study at USF". The tutors are highly qualified and selected for their knowledge and positive and encouraging attitudes. For more information, visit their web page: http://www.ugs.usf.edu/pthrust/asc.htm, stop by MPD 007, or call (813) 974-2713.
- University Experience
SLS 1101: The University Experience is a two-credit elective course that assists students with the transition from high school to university. This course is designed specifically for first-year students to welcome them to USF. This course works with multiple agencies on campus and students to build community, increase awareness of campus resources, develop basic academic skills, and explore character and values. For more information on SLS 1101, visit their web page: http://www.ugs.usf.edu/UE/index.html.
- Student Learning Services
Formerly know as "L.E.A.R.N.", Student Learning Services' mission is to "help students develop their full learning potential through advancing their abilities in reading and the study strategies necessary for achieving academic success." This group offers a variety of workshops and for-credit courses. Stop by their offices in SVC 2124 or call (813) 974-9281.
- Learning Communities
Joining a Learning Community means becoming part of a smaller "cohort" group of students with similar interests. Examples of learning community themes are "The Big Ideas, "Crime and Punishment", and "Unearthing Latin America". These communities do not limit what majors you can declare, but do offer some smaller courses that meet a number of the requirements you need to graduate. To find out more about the Learning Community options, stop by their offices at SOC 380 or their web page http://www.cas.usf.edu/LC/index.htm.
- Living Learning Communities (LLC)
USF offers several innovative living communities designed to enhance the overall university experience and provide special emphasis on an academic program or area of special interest. The Learning Living Community options include: Freshman Interest Groups (FIGs), Wellness Group, Leadership House, and more. Students interested in the academic Living Learning Communities must note their choice on their Student Housing Contract. Those who choose to join an LLC live and closely associate with a small cohort of other students who are experiencing the same courses and challenges of life at the university. To find out more about the different LLC groups and the application process visit the Residence Halls website: http://www.reserv.usf.edu/themehousing.html.
