USF Undergraduate Council - Minutes of January 12, 2004

Present: Glen Besterfield (chair), Deborah Condosta, Terry Engle, Myung Kim, J. Brian Moorhead, Chris Ponticelli, William Armitage

The meeting was called to order at 3:18 p.m.

1. The minutes of November 24, 2003 were approved with minor revisions.

2. Announcements/Discussions

   Pamela Fleege, representing the College of Education has been appointed to the Undergraduate Council.

   Provost Wilcox and Glen Besterfield will meet to discuss forming a small ad hoc committee from the Undergraduate Council members to study a student tracking system.

   Janet Moore brought up the idea of having a separate general education council or board who would look at general education course submissions. The courses might still have to come before the Undergraduate Council.

3. New course/curriculum proposals

   Minor/Certificate/Track/Concentration Proposals

   • Spanish Minor - TABLED

   • BSAS - Concentration in Environmental Policy
     This program is an AS to BSAS with emphasis in Environmental Policy. Following discussion, this degree was approved.

   • Honors Program in Sociology
     Through the Undergraduate Honors Program, the Department of Sociology provides its outstanding students with opportunities to work closely with faculty and graduate students with shared interests in specific areas of social experience. Students accepted into the program select a faculty mentor with expertise in an area of study of interest to the student. Under the supervision of this mentor, Honors Students conduct sociological research in their area of interest culminating in the preparation of an Honors Thesis. Following discussion and minor revisions of the completion requirements, this concentration was approved.

4. Assignment of Course Proposals

   • PSY 2012 Psychological Science I - substantive/ SS requirement - Condosta

   • ARC 2701 Architectural History I - new course/FA, HP requirement - Besterfield

   • ARC 2702 Architectural History II - new course/FA, HP requirement - Besterfield

The next meeting will be Monday, January 26, 2004. The meeting was adjourned at 4:24 p.m.
