The meeting was called to order at 3:05 p.m.
- The minutes of January 24, 2005 were approved.
- Announcements/Discussions
- There was a brief discussion about the progress of the +/- grading change proposal that is currently before the Faculty Senate.
- New course/curriculum proposals
- BSC 2085 Anatomy and Physiology I for Health Professionals
This course is an introduction to the normal structure, function and selected pathological conditions for physiologic systems. Focus is on understanding how the body functions in preparing for careers in nursing or health-related professions. Following discussion, this course was approved as a new course meeting the Natural Science requirement.
- BSC 2085L Anatomy and Physiology Lab I for Health Professionals
This course involves laboratory exercises and virtual dissections linked to the basic content of Anatomy and Physiology I for Health Professionals. Following discussion, this course was approved.
- BSC 2086 Anatomy and Physiology II for Healthcare Professionals
This course is an introduction of normal structure, function and selected pathological conditions for physiologic systems. Following discussion, this course was approved as a new course meeting the Natural Science requirement.

This course involves laboratory exercises and virtual dissections linked to the basic content of Anatomy and Physiology II for Health Professionals. Following discussion, this course was approved.
- NUR 2983 Microbiology for Healthcare Professionals
This course involves basics of microbiology for health professionals. Focus on disease states and the role of bacteri, virues, fungi, rickettsiae and other pathogenic organisms. Following discussion, this course was approved.
- NUR 2984 Microbiology Lab for Healthcare Professionals
This course is the lab component for the Microbiology for Healthcare Professionals course.
- NUR 4131 Issues in Advanced Illness, Dying and Death
This course involves patients, families, health care providers, and society at the end of life issues. Analysis of historical, cultural, physical, psychological, spiritual, social, political, ethical, legal and economic barriers to factors for improving end-of-life care. Following discussion, this course was approved as a new course meeting the Major Works/Major Issues requirements.
- NUR 4173 Complimentary and Alternative Therapies
This course explores and analyze Complementary and Alternative Therapies and their effectiveness and appropriateness. Discuss Alternative Medical Systems, Mind-Body Interventions, Biologically Based Therapies, Manipulative and Body-Based Methods, and Energy Therapies. Following discussion, this course was approved as a new course meeting the Major Works/Major Issues requirements.
- NUR 4330 Classroom Management of Children with Acute and Chronic Conditions
This course addresses common childhood health conditions educators may see in classroom. Policy issues related to child health, management of acute and emergency situations, and the impact of childhood chronic conditions on the child’s educational performance. Following discussion, this course was approved as a new course meeting the Major Works/Major Issues requirements.
- NUR 4655 Cultural Diversity in Health and Illness
This course explores the impact of culture on health, illness and the meanings these terms carry for members of differing sociocultural populations. Health-related practices, values, strategies for health care and beliefs among cultural groups will be analyzed. Following discussion, this course was approved as a new course meeting the Major Works/Major Issues requirements.
- NUR 4681 Strategies to Reduce Child and Adolescent Health Disparities
This course involves service learning course that addresses child and adolescent health disparities. Plan, implement, and evaluate theory and evidence-based health promotion programs to reduce racial/ethnic, age, or gender health disparities in children and adolescents. Following discussion, this course was approved as a new course meeting the Major Works/Major Issues requirements.
- Wellness Leadership Program Revision
The Wellness Leadership Program is being revised with the addition of several new courses and current course deletions as well as a specialization name change to Excercise Science. Following discussion, these changes were approved.
- PET 3211 Stress Management
This course will focus on the health and psychophysiological aspects of stress. A variety of topics will be addressed for self-regulating stress such as changing perceptions, time management, communication, biofeedback, exercise, and muscle relaxation. Following discussion, this course was approved.
- PET 3314 Professional Development Seminar
This course will introduce the student to the exercise science field. Focus will be on professional conduct, job opportunities, organizations, certifications, and trends/issues. Students will develop skills to critique fitness/wellness information. Following discussion, this course was approved.
- PET 3315 Biomechanics
This course will focus on the structure and function of the skeletal and muscular systems as well as the mechanical principles related to motor performance. Following discussion, this course was approved.
- PET 3353 Exercise Physiology
This course is designed to explore physiological adjustments and adaptations that occur as the result of exercise. The main focus will be on exercise-induced changes in the metabolic, cardiovascular, respiratory, neuromuscular, and endocrine systems. Following discussion, this course was approved.
- PET 3363 Nutrition for Fitness and Sport
This course will address weight management/weight loss, common diets, dietary supplements, ergogenic aids, and eating disorders. Content will focus on nutrition and weight management guidelines established by the American College of Sports Medicine. Following discussion, this course was approved.
- PET 3365 Physical Activity Epidemiology
This course is a presentation of the background and main concepts of epidemiology and discussion and summary of original research. Major topics include coronary artery disease, cerebrovascular disease, peripheral vascular disease, diabetes, arthritis, and COPD. Following discussion, this course was approved.
- PET 3384 Exercise Testing and Prescription
In this course students will become proficient in performing a variety of exercise tests and prescribe appropriate exercises for aerobic capacity, muscular strength and endurance, body composition, flexibility and other parameters of physical fitness. Following discussion, this course was approved.
- PET 3403 Emergency Response and Planning
In this course students will develop emergency response knowledge and skills through ARC first aid emergency response, CPR/AED certifications and will proactively assess, develop and implement a plan of response for emergency situations in fitness/wellness centers. Following discussion, this course was approved.
- PET 3713 Theory and Practice of Teaching Group Exercises
In developing group exercise leadership skills, students will learn how to apply principles of teaching safe and effective exercises designed to enhance cardiovascular endurance, muscular strength/endurance, and flexibility. Following discussion, this course was approved.
- PET 3940 Practicum in Fitness/Wellness
This course will provide the initial field experience in a community fitness/wellness center serving general populations. Students will gain practical experience with regard to teaching group exercise and conducting fitness testing and prescription. Following discussion, this course was approved.
- PET 4093 Strength and Conditioning
This course will provide students with the information necessary for designing and implementing a successful strength and conditioning program through assessment and analysis of fitness and sport movement. Following discussion, this course was approved.
- PET 4219 Exercise Psychology
This course is a presentation of the basic concepts related to exercise behavior. The content will include topics related to the psychosocial dimensions of exercise behavior to include participation, motivation, and adherence. Theoretical models will also be presented. Following discussion, this course was approved.
- PET 4402 Planning and Evaluating Fitness/Wellness Programs
This course will focus on the design of high quality fitness/wellness programs in worksite and other settings. Students will learn and apply the major components of program planning – needs assessment, development, implementation, and evaluation. Following discussion, this course was approved.
- PET 4405 Individualized Fitness/Wellness Programming
In this course students will learn how to assess, evaluate, and design safe and effective programs for individual clients. Students will also learn how to incorporate appropriate activities for specialized clients or populations. Following discussion, this course was approved.
- PET 4416 Administration of Fitness/Wellness Centers
This course will examine management issues in the areas of human resources, budgeting, marketing, legal liability, and risk management. Students will develop skills to manage safe/effective programs and services in various fitness/wellness settings. Following discussion, this course was approved.
- PET 4550 Clinical Exercise Testing and Prescription
This course is a presentation of concepts related to the clinical aspects of fitness assessment and exercise programming. Clinical conditions that will be considered include: cardiovascular disease, pulmonary disease, metabolic disease, arthritis, and geriatrics. Following discussion, this course was approved.
- PET 4941 Internship in Fitness/Wellness
This course will provide the final field experience in a community fitness/wellness center serving both general and special populations. Practical experiences will focus on all aspects of program development, delivery, and management. Following discussion, this course was approved.
