The meeting was called to order at 3:10 p.m.
- The minutes of October 10, 2005 were approved as submitted.
- Announcements/Discussions
- Dr. Larry Thompson was introduced as a new member of the Undergraduate Council from Florida Mental Health Institute.
- The Academic Renewal Policy revisions were reviewed. Following discussion, two of the revisions were approved with the third revision tabled until it is reworded and sent out to the Undergraduate Council for vote via email.
- Academic Learning Compacts were reviewed and following discussion the revisions were approved.
- The Honors at Graduation policy was revised and following discussion, the revisions were approved with amendments.
- Academic Minor clarification: The following statement will be added to the Academic Minor: [Courses used in the major may not apply to the minor]
- New course/curriculum proposals
- Proposals handled via email: All SPA courses and the Interpreter Training curriculum revisions were approved with two abstentions.
- SPA 3664 Language and Cognitive Processing Skills in English
In this course students develop the cognitive processing and language skills within English that are preliminary steps for interpretation. It will develop student's ability to segment information to perform various cognitive tasks intralingually. For Majors only. This course was approved via an email vote.
- SPA 3665 Language and Cognitive Skills in ASL
In this course students acquire cognitive processing and language development within ASL that are preliminary steps for performing simultaneous interpretation. This course also includes a service component by volunteering in various deaf communities. For majors only. This course was approved via an email vote.
- SPA 3666 Translation from English and from ASL
This course involves intralingual language exercises that introduces students to and provides practice in techniques of rephrasing and restructuring meaning in ASL and in English. For majors only. This course was approved via an email vote.
- SPA 4655 ASL to English Consecutive Interpretation
In this course students consecutively interpret conversational discourse of planned and unplanned conversational language samples from ASL to English with delays of a few seconds after the source utterance is finished. For majors only. This course was approved via an email vote.
- SPA 4656 English to ASL Consecutive Interpretation
In this course students consecutively interpret conversational discourse from English to ASL with delays from conversational language samples of various lengths ranging from single utterances to discourse units of several minutes duration. For majors only. This course was approved via an email vote.
- SPA 4657 Simultaneous Interpretation Monologic
In this course students simultaneously interpret monologic talk from ASL and from English with target language beginning before the conclusion of the source utterance and continuing as the student listens to the continuing source utterance. For majors only. This course was approved via an email vote.
- SPA 4658 Simultaneous Interpretation Dialogic
In this course students interpret dialogues from ASL to English and from English to ASL with the target language production beginning before the conclusion of the source utterance and continuing as the student listens to the continuing source utterance. For majors only. This course was approved via an email vote.
- SPA 4659 Senior Seminar
In this course students expand upon previously learned topics and discuss factors that will affect their profession. Topics include: professional organization, certification, ethics and discuss best practices and will produce a professional portfolio. For majors only. This course was approved via an email vote.
- SPA 4962 Undergraduate Comprehensive Examination
This purpose of this course is to ensure that graduates from ITT are thoroughly prepared for entry into the job market. For majors only and repeatable if necessary. It consists of 2 parts: individual meetings with an advisor and a comprehensive exam. This course was approved via an email vote.
- Interpreter Training
The Interpreter Training Track (ITT) Bachelor of Arts program is designed to provide students with advanced sign language skills and in-depth knowledge and experience of the interpreter's role and basic interpretation skills. This program prepares students to meet the interpreting needs of the deaf and hard of hearing community in a variety of setting. In addition, at the conclusion of the program, students will qualify to take a state screening or national evaluation. Completion of the program requires competency as established through a written evaluation by the National Registry of Interpreters for the Deaf (RID). The curriculum changes were approved via an email vote.
- EVR 4216 Research Methods in Wildlife Ecology
This course will review the ways in which data are collected, analyzed, and reported, so that informed decisions about wildlife management and conservation can be made. The course will have both classroom and field components. Following discussion, this course was approved.
- GET 3400 German Popular Film
This course is an overview of films with significant popular success at German box office from 1920s to present. Films will be discussed in the context of Germany’s artistic, intellectual, and social history as well as general film history and criticism. Taught in English. Following discussion and minor changes, this course was approved as a new course meeting Historical Perspectives and Major Works/Major Issues liberal arts certification.
- GER 3503 Cultural Observations in Germany
This course allows students to experience Germany from a cultural/historical perspective and gives them insights into a city’s significance within Germany as a whole. It also includes an emphasis on German language use and cultural practices. Following discussion this course was approved.
- PHZ 4434 Materials Physics
This course focuses on The physics and physical properties of materials. Strong emphasis is on the underlying physics of materials. Particular topics covered include crystal structure, phase, and electrical, thermal, optical, and magnetic properties of materials. Following discussion this course was approved as a new course meeting the Natural Sciences liberal arts certification.
- SYA 4513 Sociological Research Experience
This course is a flexible-unit course for advanced undergraduate students interested in participating in an ongoing faculty research project. Students will complete selected research tasks (background research, data collection and data analysis) with faculty supervision. Following discussion and minor changes, this course was approved.
- SYP 4012 Emotions in Society
This course examines the theories, concepts, and larger social contexts of emotions, and investigates sociological research on feelings such as anger and fear; pride and shame; love, friendship and sympathy; sadness and depression; grief and loss. Following discussion and minor changes, this course was approved.
- College of Business Administration
- Changes to MIS Major/Minor
- Remove required course in Major/Minor and allow student to choose from list of approved electives
Following discussion, this change was approved.
- Marketing - require a minimum grade of C (2.0) for all marketing courses
Following discussion, this change was approved.
- Accounting
- Addition of ACG 2071 as one of the required courses for the major
Following discussion this change was approved.
- Addition of ACG 3103 (Intermediate Financial Accounting I) and ACG 3341 (Cost Accounting and Control I) as prerequisites for all upper level accounting courses
Following discussion this change was approved.
- Limit the number of times a student may take ACG 3103 and ACG 3341 to two times (including withdrawals) and require a minimum grade of C (2.0)
Following discussion this change was approved.
- Require a minimum grade of C (2.0) for all upper level accounting courses that will count for degree credit.
Following discussion and changes to wording this change was approved.
