Minutes of September 9, 1996
Present: Glen Besterfield, Lois Gonzalez, Janet Moore, John Noonan, Joseph Simon (Chairperson), Ruth Short, Richard Wunderlin
Absent: Stanley Birkin, Mary Hardy, Margaret Hewitt, John Richmond
Guests: Dell deChant (Religious Studies), D. Thomas Porter (Undergraduate Studies), Jeff Ryan (Geology), Robert Sullins (Undergraduate Studies)
The meeting was called to order at 3:06pm.
- Joseph Simon, Chair, welcomed the new and returning members of the Council. Lois Gonzalez was introduced as the new Council representative for the College of Nursing.
- Robert Sullins, Dean of Undergraduate Studies and Director of Community College Relations, was introduced.
- The Undergraduate Council will be the primary group he will work with during his tenure.
- While enhancement of the undergraduate curriculum is important, it is not the Council's only task. The Council will also review academic policies and procedures.
- There is enough to be done by the Undergraduate Council and General Education Council for both bodies to exist at this time. This Council will approve all new courses before they go to the General Education Council.
- Banner, the new student data system, can not handle FF grades. There is also no way for the system to enforce the Three Drop Policy. The Council needs to review and find solutions to these problems.
- Senate Bill 2330 - degree limitation - common prerequisites
- The minutes of April 22, 1996 were approved as submitted.
- Discussion on Undergraduate Council Operating Procedures and Charge
The change from Instructional Quality and Innovation to Undergraduate Studies in the Council Operating Procedures and Charge was approved.
- Discussion and review of course proposals
- GLY 4780 Geological Field Studies
Jeff Ryan presented this new course to the Council. Topics and specific places will vary term to term. The course is not required for the major at this time. Following further discussion, the course was approved.
- REL 3128 Race & Religion in America
Dell deChant answered Council members' questions regarding this course. Offered previously as Selected Topics, the course examines the role of religion in American society with emphasis on the African American experience. Following discussion, the course was approved with a change of title and minimum qualifications.
- Discussion on Senate Bill 2330
The Oversight Committee of the Articulation Coordinating Committee approved a grace period of one year for the implementation of course level changes.
- Future Discussions
- Gordon Rule Courses - Some classes have more than 100 students in them. The Council will request information from Institutional Research and Planning and data on enrollment for the past two years.
- Cheating - referred by the Faculty Senate Executive Committee. The Council needs to redefine what cheating is at USF and what constitutes cheating.
- Distribution and assignment of new course proposals
- Certificate Program in Corrections - Glen Besterfield
- Modifications to Major and Minor in Criminology - Glen Besterfield
- CCJ 4260 Environmental Law and Crime - Lois Gonzalez
- CCJ 4281 Correctional Law - Lois Gonzalez
- CCJ 4315 Correctional Administration - Lois Gonzalez
- CCJ 4511 Police and Juvenile Delinquency - Glen Besterfield
- CCJ 4513 Juvenile Rights and Procedures - Glen Besterfield
- CCJ 4540 Juvenile Correctional Alternatives - Glen Besterfield
- CCJ 4550 Developmental Aspects of Juvenile Delinquency - Glen Besterfield
- CCJ 4651 Kids and Drugs - Glen Besterfield
- EEX 4015 Narrative Perspectives on Exceptionality: Cultural and Ethical - Margaret Hewitt
The next meeting will be Monday, September 23, 1996. The meeting was adjourned at 4:17pm.
