USF Undergraduate Council - Minutes of September 8, 1997

The meeting was called to order at 3:04 pm.

1. The minutes of April 14, 1997 were approved as submitted.

2. Lois Gonzalez welcomed the old and new members of the council. Packets were distributed that included operating procedures, course proposal formats, roster, and the Moore checklist. Agendas and minutes will be available on the web at http://www.ugs.usf.edu/uc/ugcoun.htm and will be sent by e-mail to the council members. There was discussion of the availablity of student members. If there are no students this year, the quorum may need to be changed.

   The State-wide Course Numbering System has a special group of course numbers (x990 - x999) that are to be used for "experimental" courses. In the past, USF has used the selected topics number sequence for this purpose. There will be more information regarding this number sequence and how it is to be used soon.

   There was general discussion regarding the functions of the Undergraduate Council and the General Education Council. The Faculty Senate is reviewing how the membership of the GEC is appointed. The GEC is not appointed through the Faculty Senate Committee on Committees. The GEC is in the process of evaluating the courses approved to meet the General Education and Exit requirements during this academic year.

   The Undergraduate Studies web site has a searchable course database that also shows what courses and sections are available by term (Fall is available now). The UGS Web staff will be adding course syllabi to this site for student access as the syllabi are made available.

   The new course proposals, etc., were distributed and assigned to members for the next meeting.

The next meeting will be Monday, September 22, 1997. This meeting will be held in SVC 2031 because of construction in the regular meeting room. The meeting was adjourned at 4:00 p.m.
