The meeting was called to order at 3:10 pm.
- The minutes of September 28, 1998 were approved as submitted.
- Announcements: The Faculty Senate is working on replacements for the missing Council members (Nursing and Business). Richard Dietrich will be the replacement for Silvia Fiore. No new students have been appointed yet. The two recommended had class conflicts with the meeting time.
- Discussion and action on proposals
- MGF 1106 Finite Mathematics
The Department of Mathematics is redesigning some of the lower-level courses to meet student need and General Education requirements. There will be two more course proposals later this semester. The new numbers have been chosen to match the other schools in the SUS. The course was approved.
- PET 3251 Issues in Sport
This course will become part of the Elective Physical Education program. It focuses on organized sport and on the role of organized sport in contemporary society. The course was approved with a change in title to Sport in Society: Critical Issues.
- AML 4303 Major Works: Zora Neale Hurston
This course focuses on the life and works of Zora Neale Hurston. Because of the content of the course and critical work expected of the students, a prerequisite of "Junior/Senior Standing" was added to the course. It was approved with this change.
- AFA 4033 Black English
This course focuses on linguistic patterns of African Americans in the Western Hemisphere. Because of the content of the course and critical work expected of the students, a prerequisite of "Junior/Senior Standing" was added to the course. It was approved with this change.
- AFS 3284 African Literature Survey
This course examines the socio-historical, philosophical, and political dynamics of African cultures through the study of African oral literature and the reading of African literary texts of various genres. The course was approved following discussion.
- GLY 4012 Arguments about the Earth
The course will allow students to analyze various arguments behind theories involving the Earth and its history. The course was approved with a change in the title to Theories and Arguments about the Earth and a change of the word "midterms" to "exams" in 6C.
- IDS 4956 International Community Internship
These internships are open to all majors. The course is designed for students outside of the United States. They would have to do an internship with a specific community-based organization. The course was approved with the provision that Dean Sullins be aware of the Council members concern that there needed to be some mechanism for faculty participation, in addition to the program director's, in setting up of student internships and in the evaluation of the students' work.
- Modification of Criminology Law Enforcement Track
The change would allow students to select one of two different courses as part of the major requirements. This changes was approved.
- Distribution and assignment of new course proposals, etc.
The next meeting will be Monday, Monday, October 26, 1998. The meeting was adjourned at 5:20 pm.
