USF Undergraduate Council - Minutes of February 28, 2000

The meeting was called to order at 3:08 p.m.

1. The minutes of January 24, 2000 and February 14, 2000 were approved.

2. Announcements

   Edward Silbert brought forth a motion to reconsider EGN 36xx: Engineering Economics with Social and Global Implications as a course meeting the Social Science requirement. Following a brief discussion, the council agreed to reconsider that requirement.

3. Review of Course Proposals

   • 3+2 MBA Program - This program will represent a joint venture between the Colleges of Arts and Sciences and Business Administration. Under this program, students would complete their undergraduate general education and major requirements in three years under the College of Arts and Sciences, as well prepare themselves for entry into the MBA program at the beginning of their fourth year. Following discussion, this proposal was tabled pending a revised proposal with the following stipulations: raise admissions standards, state minimum undergraduate hours, and provide clear objectives of proposal.

   • AFA 4350 African American Community Research - This interactive, field experience course introduces students to active and applied research methodologies and the uses of this research in Black urban communities. Following discussion and the stipulation that the course be shared with the Anthropology department, this course was approved as a new course meeting MW/MI exit requirements.

   • AFA 4500 Slavery in the Americas and the Caribbean - This course examines the institution of slavery in North, South, and Central America, and the Caribbean. It explores the social, political, and economic underpinnings of slavery. Following discussion and the stipulation that the course be shared with the History department, this course was approved as a new course meeting MW/MI exit requirements.

   • ART 2203 Fabrications II - Fabrications II will synthesize and expand on the groundwork laid in Fabrications I, which is pre-requisite for majors, but not for non-majors. Fabrications II will focus on the significance of meaning and how it is constructed visually by researching 3 phases; I - the personal in images, We - images of cultural ideas, and They - images produced through collaboration. Following discussion, this course was approved as a new course.

   • ART 3302 Intermediate Drawing- This course involves an extension of the skills and concepts introduced in Beginning Drawing with an emphasis on individual experimentation and the development of advanced critical and technical skills in the discipline. Following discussion, this course was approved as a new course.

   • ART 3520 Intermediate Painting - This course involves an extension of the skills introduced in Beginning Painting with an emphasis on individual experimentation and the development of advanced critical and technical skills in the discipline. Following discussion, this course was approved as a new course.

   • ART 3401 Intermediate Printmaking - This course concentrates on developing intermediate skills in printmaking, with particular emphasis on conceptual topics. The course is intended for majors. Following discussion, this course was approved as a new course.

   • ART 3468 Digital Printmaking - This course involves continued studies and projects in sculpture, with an emphasis on site-specific sculpture, installation and performance. A critical and cultural awareness of contemporary issues and media in sculpture will be developed through studio projects, assigned readings, discussions, critiques and demonstrations. Following discussion, this course was approved as a new course.

   • ART 3222 Intermediate Electronic Media - This course is an intermediate exploration of the issues and practices involved in the creation of experimental computer art. The course focuses on an interdisciplinary approach to electronic media while developing individual creative growth. Following discussion, this course was approved as a new course.

   • ART 3701 Intermediate Sculpture - This course expands upon the principles and processes introduced in beginning sculpture, developing a higher level of technical competence and critical sophistication. Intermediate Sculpture is prerequisite to Multiples, Molds and Bronzecasting and Site, Installation, Performance. Following discussion, this course was approved as a new course.

   • ART 3710 Multiples, Molds, and Bronze Casting - This course involves continued studies and projects in sculpture, with an emphasis on the nature of multiples explored through advanced mold making and bronze casting. Following discussion, this course was approved as a new course.

   • ART 3808 Intermediate Sculpture: Site, Installation, Performance - This course involves continued studies and projects in sculpture, with an emphasis on site-specific sculpture, installation and performance. A critical and cultural awareness of contemporary issues and media in sculpture will be developed through studio projects, assigned readings, discussions, critiques and demonstrations. Following discussion, this course was approved as a new course.

   • ART 3111 Intermediate Ceramics - This course builds upon the basic skills of Beginning Ceramics and introduces more advanced techniques and technologies, including, but not limited to, wheel throwing, mold making, glaze calculation, formulation of clay bodies, etc. Following discussion, this course was approved as a new course.

   • PGY 3401 Intermediate Photography - A mid-level course directed toward expanding upon the basic skills developed in Beginning Photography. Course content works toward developing the beginnings of a personal artistic direction by exposing students to new ideas of image making while developing awareness of the social, political and visual history of the medium. Basic black and white photographic skills are required. Following discussion, this course was approved as a new course.

   • PGY 3930 Special Topics in Photography - A mid-level course directed toward expanding the student's visual and technical skills while working toward the beginning of a personal artistic direction by exposing the student to new ideas, technical skills and genres, including, but not limited to: color photography, digital photography, non-silver photography and documentary photography. Readings and discussion will enhance social, political, and historical awareness. Following discussion, this course was approved as a new course.

   • ARH 3454 Contemporary Issues in Art - This course focuses upon the productions, themes and processes of artists working in the present time. This course will investigate the relationship of materials and media used by contemporary artists to the subject and content of artists' productions/products as well as conceptual processes. Following discussion, this course was approved as a new course.

   • ARH 4721 Graphicstudio/ History of Media: Printmaking - This course examines the history of Western printmaking from the Middle Ages to contemporary times, with an emphasis on artmaking technology and research, cultural perspectives and theoretical/ critical analytical capabilities. Following discussion, this course was approved as a new course.

   • ART 4970 Senior Thesis - Senior Thesis is the culmination of the academic experiences studying the visual arts in the BFA program. This course offers the opportunity to synthesize the skills, growth, processes, working procedures, context and content of your art studies into a final studio project supported by a formal written document that clearly describes the above as related to a specific body of work. Following discussion, this course was approved as a new course.

   • Revision of Fine Arts Curriculum - In order to provide a comprehensive educational/artistic experience to students choosing to major in Art, it is the intention of the Department of Art to revise the current B.A. in Art to reflect the need for both specific and diverse areas of study in order to create two distinct degree plans:
     1. Activate the B.F.A. in Studio Art
     2. Revise the B.A. with emphasis in Studio or Art History to reflect State Statute while maintaining the philosophy of a broadly based liberal arts curriculum.

     Following discussion, the B.F.A. in Studio Art, and the revisions to the B.A. in Studio and Art History were approved.

   • THE 4180 Theatre Origins - This course requires substantial reading of Greek tragedy. Values and ethics are essential topics. Following discussion, this course was approved as meeting the LW exit requirement.

   • THE 4320 The Theatre of Myth and Ritual - This course requires substantial reading of medieval English drama, renaissance English drama, Chinese drama and Japanese drama. Values, ethics and international dimensions are essential topics. Following discussion, this course was approved as meeting the LW exit requirement.

   • THE 4401 O’Neill and After - This course requires substantial reading of plays by Eugene O’Neill, Arthur Miller, Tennessee Williams, and Edward Albee. Ethnicity, gender, values and ethics are essential topics. Following discussion, this course was approved as meeting the LW exit requirement.

   • THE 4435 Theatre of Pluralism - This course requires substantial reading of plays and critical theory by female, minority and other under-represented groups. Values, ethics, gender, race, and ethnicity are essential topics. Following discussion, this course was approved as meeting the LW exit requirement.

   • THE 4562 Contemporary Performance Theory - This course requires substantial reading of critical theory. Values, ethics, gender, race, ethnicity and international perspectives are essential topics. Following discussion, this course was approved as meeting the LW exit requirement.

   • THE 4434 Caribbean Theatre - This course is a study of plays and popular theatrical forms of the Caribbean. The student will investigate the social and political forces that shape the culture of the Caribbean, the residual effects of colonialism and the turbulence of independence as expressed in the dramatic art and theatre of the English-speaking West Indies. Following discussion, this course was approved as meeting the MW/MI, LW and Gordon Rule exit requirements.

   • College of Engineering MW/MI exemption - This proposal was deferred to the next Undergraduate Council meeting.

The next meeting will be Monday, March 27, 2000. The meeting was adjourned at 5:12 p.m.
