USF Undergraduate Council - Minutes of December 13, 1999

The meeting was called to order at 3:04 p.m.

1. The minutes of September 27, October 11, November 8, and November 22 were approved.

3. Review of Course Proposals

   • EML 3041 Computational Methods - This course examines techniques and computer programming languages to solve engineering problems using numerical methods. Topics will include roots of equations, matrix algebra, integration, differential equations, and curve filling. Following discussion, changes in course number, curriculum, and catalog copy description were approved.

   • SPC 4632 Rhetoric and Social Change - This course investigates rhetoric and culture as processes and products of social change. Following discussion, it was approved as meeting the Gordon Rule writing requirement, as well as the MW liberal arts exit requirement.

   • FRT 3001 Great Love Stories in French Translation - This course offers an overview of the evolution of the concept of romantic and passionate love in French Literature throughout the centuries and its impact on western literature and thought. Following discussion and submittal of revised forms and syllabi, it was approved as a new course meeting MW exit requirements.

   • FRE 3502 The Francophone World - This course offers an overview of the main French speaking cultures throughout the world, outside of France. Following discussion and submittal of revised forms and syllabi, as well as discussion with Anthropology department; it was approved as a new course meeting MW exit requirements.

   • FRT 3140 French Literary Masterpieces in English Translation - This course is a survey of the major literary works of France, tracing not only literary but also intellectual and cultural history from the Middle Ages to the present. Following discussion, it was approved as a new course meeting Gordon Rule and LW exit requirements.

   • POR 2240 Brazilian Portuguese Conversation - This course is for the development of basic conversational skills in Brazilian Portuguese. Following discussion, it was approved as a new course.

   • POR 3440 Portuguese for Business and International Trade - This course involves Brazilian Portuguese as used in carrying on ordinary business transactions. Following discussion and minor changes, it was approved as a new course.

   • THE 3120 Theatre History - This course involves the study of theatrical productions from the Jacobean era to the contemporary stage in its cultural context including theatre architecture, scenography, acting and directing. Following discussion, it was approved as meeting the MW exit requirements.

   • Concentration in Applied Behavior Analysis - The Department of Psychology wishes to offer a Concentration in Applied Behavior Analysis. Undergraduate Psychology majors are eligible to apply to this program of specialized study and supervised field placement. Following discussion, this proposal was approved.

   • PSY ---- Supervised Practicum and Field Experience in Applied Behavior - This course provides field experience in applied settings. Under the supervision of Certified Behavior Analysts, students design, implement and evaluate behavior analysis services. Includes both field practicum and didactic components. May be repeated for a maximum of 6 hours. Does not count toward major credit. Following discussion and change in course number, it was approved as a new course.

   • PSY 4933 Seminar in Applied Behavior Analysis - This course is an advanced seminar with emphasis on establishing competencies in skills needed for the ethical application of Behavior Analysis to human problems. Provides instruction in theoretical and conceptual issues; assessment and treatment procedures; legal, ethical and socio-cultural issues. Following discussion and change in course title, it was approved as a new course.

   • PET 3252 Issues in Sport - This course provides students with a study of organized sport as a pervasive part of contemporary society. By increasing understanding of some of the issues and controversies based in the structure of sport and society, individuals will be able to understand and improve sport experiences for themselves and others. Following discussion and minor changes, it was approved as a new course meeting MW exit requirements.

   • +/- Grading Proposal - The +/- Grading system was discussed. USF is the only state university that does not implement this system. The Undergraduate Council voted to forward approval of this proposal to the Executive Council and Faculty Senate.

   • Liberal Arts Exit Requirements and second baccalaureate seekers
     1. With post-graduate degree
     2. Without post-graduate degree

     After a brief discussion, the liberal arts requirements were tabled until the next Undergraduate Council meeting.

The next meeting will be Monday, January 24, 2000. The meeting was adjourned at 5:06 p.m.
